January 2013

18-20 January 2013

A few photos of birds in the snow. The Glaucous Gull looking most at home. For those who think this birds is poorly, may I suggest that it just gets a bit sleepy in the afternoons, like the best of us. I'd hate to see some well meaning 'welfare' organisation attempting to catch it just because it's overdosed on bread and has decided to sleep it off.

I like Rose-coloured Starlings. I'm not sure why, but it certainly helps that they're rare! This scruffy moulting bird showed really well in Exminster - thanks James and family! On the way home some Waxwings showed well but in very harsh light at Bathpool.

Trying to get a different photograph of a bird that hundreds of people have got excellent photos of is difficult, so I tried to photograph the mites around the eye of the Glaucous Gull. I have no idea what these things are, but lots of gulls have them, particularly arctic gulls it seems.

Wow, this Glaucous Gull at Apex showed down to just a few feet this afternoon. When it got out the water I needed to stand well back to get the whole bird in the frame. An adult Mediterranean Gull usually gets attention on Apex, but this afternoons bird was slightly eclipsed.

A nice days birding. The Temminck's Stint at Steart showed very well in the morning and allowed me to take the shot that I'd been after for quite a while. The light was good, the bird close and against a largely blue background. Cheers!
