March 2013

17-18 March 2012

The gull at the top was at Apex on the 17th. It looks like a Yellow-legged Gull, but there's something just not quite right about it - the nearest I can get is hybrid Lesser Black-backed x Herring Gull, but I'd be interested in comments. Wing tip is good for YLG with black on P5, mantle shade is good, but legs are quite pink. Also one eye is dark and one eye is light. It will be interesting to see what is was ringed as - the ringer has been informed. The Firecrest was one at Apex and the Pied-billed Grebe was in crap light.

Update: The gull was indeed ringed as a hybrid Lesser Black-backed x Herring Gull - from a nest on the roof of the West Hatch centre on 31/7/2009.

A nice male Northern Wheatear at Brean Down cove. The first of many we hope!

9 March 2012

I've just got round to unloading these photos of the weird stilltail at Cheddar Reservoir. It does look just like what I would expect an Argentine Ruddy Duck to look like (or Lake Duck, or whatever else you'd like to call it), but I'm not totally sure.

Several Greater Scaup showed well at Cheddar Reservoir today, this was one of the drakes. The Twite is a horrible photo from Aust Wharf that I took a few days ago and the Waxwing from a brief fuel fill-up at Morrisons in Weston-super-Mare

2 March 2013

The White-fronted Goose that's been around for a while, but showed closely at Sharpham today.
